Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Depending on the type of disability your child has, hyperbaric oxygen therapy may prove to be beneficial. These treatments are still considered experimental. However, some children have experienced major improvements.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a therapeutic treatment that dates back to the 1920's, at which time it was already being used to treat naval and commercial deep-sea divers suffering from the "bends".

When receiving HBOT treatments, a person lies or sits in a monoplace or multiplace hyperbaric chamber and breathes 100% oxygen (the air we normally breathe contains only 21% oxygen). The atmospheric pressure is increased to greater than found at sea level, hence the term "hyperbaric". In a multiplace chamber, the oxygen is administered through a clear treatment hood that is placed over the person's head.

The clinic also offers treatments for some pathologies for which HBOT treatments have yet to be scientifically proven successful. Here are some pathologies which are undergoing clinical trails or pilot projects throughout the world:

  • neurological injury: brain injury, CP, cerebral vascular accident, MS, migraine headache, cerebral oedema, spinal cord injury, peripheral neuropathy;
  • trisomy 21
  • intellectual deficiency
  • autism
  • traumatic ischemia (musculoskeletal sports injury);
  • facial paralysis (Bell's paralysis)
  • addition to rehabilitation for: spastic hemiplegia post-stroke, paraplegia, peripheral vascular disease;
  • asphyxiation: near-drowning, near-hanging;
  • hearing impairment: sudden deafness, syndrome of Ménière, acute otitis media (chronic infection).
We recommend you thoroughly discuss the benefits of these treatments with you practitioner.

Occupational Therapist
Occupational Therapists help people to improve their daily lives. OT's work with individuals who have conditions that are mentally, physically, developmentally or emotionally disabling. Sometimes their work involves assistance with motor skills, sometimes it involves things as simple as bathing or eating. Occupational therapists instruct people with permanent disabilities such as spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. They also work with specific age groups that need more help like older people who are losing their motor skills or babies who have yet to develop them. You can obtain the services of an occupational therapist through your local CLSC or hospital but keep in mind that there may be a long waiting list. Psychologist
Being the parents of a disabled child can be a very difficult thing for a couple to go through. Every individual deals through this experience in their own way, which can put an added strain on your life as a couple and family.

Accepting the fact that your child is disabled may be a long and difficult process. If you, your spouse, or someone else in your family is having difficulty dealing with this new reality, psychologists are there to help. Your local CLSC or hospital may offer this service free of charge, but there are only about 100 psychologists working out of CLSCs in Québec and a few hundred affiliated to hospitals, therefore making it difficult to obtain the services of a psychologist quickly.

You can always seek the services of a private practise psychologist.
www.ordrepsy.qc.ca

Psychologists have created various fields (geriatric psychology, neuropsychology, school psychology, etc) in order to reach and help specific groups of people. Feel free to ask questions so that you feel comfortable with the type of services offered to you.

These services are not covered by the Quebec Health Insurance Plan. However, certain private insurance policies may cover these services under their own conditions.

A remedial teacher is one who helps children having difficulties in school. You can obtain the services of a private practice remedial teacher. The best way to do this is to speak to someone at your child's school or look through your local newspaper for ads.

Many Québec companies now offer these services for FREE for children with difficulties. These fees are now included in the Employee Assistance Services (EAS) and in private insurance.

Speech Language Pathologist and Audiologist
A speech language pathologist may be seen at your hospital or in private practice. The waiting list in private practice is about 2 months. Some schools offer these services for pre-school children only.

Public practice: The advantages of consulting a speech language pathologist or audiologist at a hospital, school or CLSC is that the consultations and therapies are covered by the Quebec Health Insurance Plan. The down side is that the waiting lists are very long. Call beforehand to get information on the length of the waiting list.

Private practice: A number of speech language pathologists and audiologists can be seen through their private practice. These fees are not covered by the Quebec Insurance Health Plan but certain private insurance policies may cover these services under their own conditions.
